  • Mention you would like a job that keeps you active and you are not one to sit at a desk all day.
  • Say why you think Fry’s is better than its competitors.
  • State you feel their opportunity for advancement since Fry’s is part of the Kroger Family.

3. Why should we hire you?

When answering this question, consider the following tips:

  • Be straightforward and confident about your abilities.
  • Highlight the reasons why you are the right candidate.
  • Express enthusiasm for why you want this job.
  • Additionally, affirm your ability to work hard.

4. What hours can you work?

  • Try and be flexible when answering this question. The more relaxed you are with your hours, the better your chance of landing the job.
  • State that you understand if you need to work on weekends and holidays.

  • The grocer also operates under the banner Fry’s Marketplace which sells food and general merchandise.
  • Kroger is the parent company of Fry’s.
  • Fry’s was founded in 1954 by Donald Fry in northern California.
  • Fry’s Signature is marketed as a high-end, neighborhood-tailored grocery store.
  • Finally, Fry’s Mercado is geared towards Arizona’s large Hispanic community.

6. Who are Fry’s competitors?

  • Its largest competitors are Walmart, Target, and Sprouts.

7. How would you define excellent customer service?

  • The customer is not waiting long at checkout.
  • The grocery store is clean both inside and outside.
  • Inventory is well stocked and supplied.
  • Customers receive friendly and helpful service.

8. Can you tell me about a time when you were proud of the level of service you gave a customer?

Customers love it when you go above and beyond for them, which, in turn, generates more business. Try to think of a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

  1. When I was a server at a restaurant, we did not have a particular dessert. Luckily, the restaurant next door had it, and I was able to get it for them
  2. In my last job, I worked at a fast-food chain, and one day, there was a senior citizen at the restaurant who had finished his meal. It started to rain, and he was worried as he did not have an umbrella. Luckily, I had one, so I walked him to his car, sheltering him from the rain.

9. Why is customer service so important?

Great customer service can

  • Increase customer loyalty
  • Grow the amount of money each customer spends per visit
  • Increase how often a customer buys from you
  • Generate positive word-of-mouth about your business

10. How was your attendance in your last job?

  • Honesty is your best approach when answering this question as the interviewer may check your references.
  • Emphasize that you understand the importance of starting your shift on time.

11. Why did you leave your last job?

The only answer to this question is to say that you have learned all you can from your last job and are looking for new opportunities to learn and grow in your career.

Here is a recommended answer:

  • “I enjoyed my last job, however, I felt growth was minimal and I was no longer learning. I want to explore new challenges”.   

Don’t Say

  • Anything negative about your former boss/employer.
  • Complaints about the salary.
  • You left on bad terms.

12. What motivates you?

Employers ask this question because they want to see your resiliency, determination on how you’ll handle challenges and setbacks.

Say

  • Meeting deadlines, targets, or goals.
  • Mentoring and coaching others.
  • Learning new things.
  • Coming up with creative ideas to improve something or make something new.
  • Working well as part of a team.
  • Finding a way to solve a problem or overcome a challenge.

13. How do you feel about standing on your feet for long periods of time?

  • Most jobs in retail will require you to work on your feet for long periods of time. If possible tell the interviewer you do not have a problem with this. Try to wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with low heels, maintain good posture, and stay hydrated.

14. If you could be one animal what would it be?

Interviewers ask this question because it may reveal more about your character, or see how you operate under stress.

When you state what animal you would be, state why.

Possible Answers are

  • Dogs to demonstrate loyalty
  • Ants are hard workers and team-players
  • Dolphins are smart
  • Elephants are strong
  • Gorilla is gentle but powerful, a good parent, and a good leader

Questions to ask at the end of the interview

15. Do you have any questions for us?

  • What do you like best about working here?
  • How would you describe your ideal candidate for this position?
  • What about this position is the most important?
  • How would you measure my success and what could I do to exceed your expectations?
  • Which part of the position has the steepest learning curve? What can I do to get up to speed quickly?
  • What opportunities will I have to learn and grow?

Does Fry’s Drug Test?

  • Fry’s does not drug test. Several of the job descriptions on Kroger state one must produce the ability to pass a drug test but drug tests are usually only performed if someone has been injured on the job.

Fry’s Open Interview

  • An open interview is where you apply in person and they interview you on the spot. If you study the questions above and dress well you will do fine.
